Public's views sought on Political Party Funding through online forum
Sir Hayden Phillips has today launched an online forum - http://forum.partyfundingreview.gov.uk/ - on political party funding. The forum gives a chance for members of the public to discuss the key issues on how parties should be funded, including whether there should a cap on donations, any changes to state funding or further restrictions on the amount parties can spend.
Sir Hayden said:
"This online forum is for people to participate in a dialogue on party funding. I get to hear a lot about what the parties have to say but what does the public think?
"This forum is an opportunity for me to hear what the views of the public are. Hopefully, through reading through the information available from the party funding review website, and engaging in a discussion with other interested members of the public, people's understanding of the issues will deepen and we can capture their ideas and feelings.
"People's views posted to this forum will be taken into account."
The forum opened with Sir Hayden introducing a discussion theme on the objectives of the Review, including trying to improve public confidence in the party funding system.
This week's forum theme is caps on donations. Professor Justin Fisher of Brunel University has set out his thoughts in an introductory posting. Sir Hayden intends regularly to introduce new topics to drive discussion forward and, to a certain extent, mirror the analytical work being done by his review team.
Sir Hayden plans, at this stage, to keep the online forum running until the end of September 2006.
